The People’s Park (Social Studies)
How can we design a park that positively impacts the public?
Students create a park design for a Superfund site that the Port of Seattle is restoring into a public green space. Students take on roles either as park designers or Port Commissioners. Teams design parks that address specific stakeholder perspectives, then present and defend their designs at a mock Commissioner meeting where the student Commissioners will decide which park most positively impacts the public.
Key content: perspective taking, environmental issues, community needs, industry and business, Native American tribal concerns
Unit length: 4 Weeks (20 hours)
