Ring of Fire

Is it possible for people to live safely along the Ring of Fire?

Teams create a stop-motion animated film to answer the question: Is it possible to live safely in the Ring of Fire? Teams are assigned a specific location on the Ring of Fire and use curated resources to research the history of earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions in that place. Through modeling, data analysis, computer simulations, and other project work, students learn about the geologic forces that cause the Ring of Fire to be so active. Teams share their findings and proposed hazard mitigation options to an audience at a Ring of Fire Film Festival.

Unit length: 5 weeks (25 hours)
