I Was There

What was it like to live through the American Civil War and Reconstruction eras?

Students begin by exploring historical paintings depicting the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. They learn the importance of historical accuracy as well as the notion of empathy in creating art that can engage and instruct its audience. They learn about point of view and analyze a range of artwork depicting people who lived during this time. Working in teams, students combine their art analysis with research into other primary and secondary sources, and their own imaginations, to create, curate, and present a living museum room that answers the question: How was life changing for Americans during the Civil War and Reconstruction?

Unit length: 5 weeks (25 hours)
